The Shanghai Expo 2010 will open in just 3 days, running for 184 days (from 1 May to 31 October, 2010). When it comes to China, nothing is on a small scale these days if they can help it, just browsing the Events section of the Expo gives something to look forward to, from parades to song, dance, insights into the local food and culture.
The theme for this expo is “Better City, Better Life” and aims to bring awareness to and perhaps tackle the challenging issues that face global cities in the near future.
In this post, some pictures of Shanghai today, from food that includes century eggs to braised pork and chicken, to the clean modern lines of a hotel, a room on the 27th floor with a view over Shanghai.

I’m unsure how the rest of the world spins, but it is extremely Singaporean to have the children multi-tasking and developing their talents by the age of 3 to 4 years of age. With that for parents, come the heart melting delight of school concerts and seeing those tiny beings hop around in colourful costumes, too adorable to describe!

It was a splendidly fun evening meeting up with Anders Thorsell for this photography session. We walked the banks of Boat Quay and Clarke Quay in tropical Singapore, discussing travels, food and life in Sweden and in Singapore.
Anders’ passion lies as much in the field of photography as in travel. He’s recently back from his travels to the East and Far East including Dubai, Taipei, Philippines and Cambodia. Check out his latest travel writings at his blog, entitled Anders Thorsells Reseberättelser.

The interior of the catholic Schönenberg Church in all its baroque glory. The lengthy and massive carpted aisle to the altar greets both faithfuls and visitors alike upon entering the church.

In this previous post, Kevin took you on a photographic tour of the outside of the Schönenberg Church in Ellwangen, Germany. In this post, he’ll take you through a photographic journey inside the baroque Catholic Church. The compounds around Haus Schönenberg in Ellwangen, Germany.

Haus Schönenberg is a charming hotel located in the small historic German town of Ellwangen that lies east of Baden-Württemburg. It’s a throw back in time in its architecture, standing next to the renowned pilgrimage church, Wallfahrtskirche.

While the hotel isn’t one that is too luxe, visitors will be won over by its rustic appeal. Those who love the outdoors and nature can explore the rather generous grounds of the place. Continue reading ‘In black and white: Haus Schönenberg, Ellwangen, Germany’

Every season evokes a feel, an aura…

These pictures by Serge Sinkevich capture beautifully, the spirit of autumn, 2008

Capturing rush hour in Thailand, Anders Thorsell snapped this buzzing picture of a BTS (train) station in Bangkok, Thailand. I thought it a perfect shot since he mentioned that photography was strictly forbidden there.
Great pictures can tell a story without words, and in that aspect, I think Anders Thorsell has many stories to tell, all of which are inspiring. He blogs about his travels, life in Sundsvall and the various aspects of photography in different walks of life. Continue reading ‘Anders Thorsell: capturing life in pictures’

Geoffrey Pereira (left).
Journalist Geoffrey Pereira and I met whilst he was on a visit to Gothenburg, for the World Editor’s Forum that took place in early June, 2008.
It was wonderful meeting a fellow Singaporean on foreign soil and Geoffrey shared that, while managing a small IT department in Singapore Press Holdings, he had cultivated a passion of another sort, one that allowed for self expression beyond words, that of photography.
I had the opportunity to browse through Geoffrey’s themed photography portfolio. The above bare-backed picture of a woman with saturated colour swirls, is one obtained from his Fabrics portfolio, where he experimented with expressing the female form against various types of fabrics, the colours and textures of the fabric contrasting to the pallor of skin.
A portfolio that caught my particular attention was what Geoffrey called his Trash Bag Project, where he worked with cutting and stitching pieces of trash bags to form wearable outfits. Continue reading ‘Meeting with Geoffrey Pereira: exploring expression in photography’

This particular runway show was held by TANGS, a major departmental chain store in Singapore today, with humble beginnings in Singapore from the 1950s. A picture of Spring in Sweden. Photo: Kevin D. Cordeiro
This picture, taken by Kevin D. Cordeiro, reminds me of the phrase, my secret garden, the loosely tied rope around the tiny gates that promises green pastures beyond.
My secret garden as a phrase that has about 1.5 million hits on google if you search for it. The most popular is a metaphorical use of the phrase in a book by Nancy Friday. Her books are recommended reads. And a favourite of mine is My Secret Garden, a restaurant by that name just beside Plaza by the Park in Singapore. Continue reading ‘My secret garden’
